This vile and cowardly act is not only against the life of a young, brave democratic leader, but also one that constitutes a direct threat against the republican institutions and the stability of the State of the Right in Colombia.
Miguel Uribe Turbay, the grandson of former president Julio César Turbay and the honorable son of journalist Diana Turbay, who was assassinated in 1991 while kidnapped, represents a generation that is committed to democratic principles, legislation, and public service. His recent presidential aspirations under the flag of the Central Democratic Party, founded by former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, is evidence of his dedication to the defense of liberty and the strengthening of the Colombian nation.
The Cuban National Congress, a political organ of the Cuban exile that is committed to democratic transition in Cuba, expresses its total solidarity with Senator Uribe Turbay, his family, his party, and all of his brothers within the Colombian people. We pray that he promptly recuperates and demand that this criminal not remain unpunished.
Political violence is an attack against all free peoples in Latin America. Today, more than ever, we call for unity in support of life, peace, justice, and democracy.
